Hear Hear

Guest book alternative

A guest book alternative people actually read

Guest books get signed at the door in a queue and read once. Audio phones, Polaroid walls and signed records are prettier versions of the same thing. Here is what to look for in an alternative, and one that puts the messages in the room.

Ideas

What a good guest book alternative does

Whatever you choose, these are the things worth having.

  1. Collects before the day, not only at the door

The best messages take more than thirty seconds in a queue. A link sent ahead gives people time, and lets those who can't come still send something.

  2. Takes photos and stories, not only signatures

A photo with the story behind it says more than "Congratulations". A voice note says more again: the voice is half of it.

  3. Gets read on the day

Messages read weeks later, alone, miss the moment. Choose something that shares them in the room, where the person can see who sent what.

  4. Lasts, and can be shared

A book sits in one cupboard. A page everyone can open and save from their phone keeps it with everyone who was there.

What to ask for

Prompts that get better messages

A blank page gets "All the best". A good prompt gets something worth keeping.

  • Share a memory with them that makes you smile.
  • Send a photo, and tell us where and when it was taken.
  • What's one piece of advice for them?
  • What would you say if you had the microphone for a minute?
  • Finish this: I knew they were one of a kind when...

Why it works

How Hear Hear does it differently

Guests send messages, photos with their story, voice notes, toasts and advice from a link or the QR code on the door sign, with no app and no account. On the day the best of it goes on the TV, as toasts between the rounds of a quiz made from it, and afterwards everything sits on a keepsake page anyone with the link can open and save.

How to run it

How to set it up with Hear Hear

  1. Set up the event.

Who it's for, the occasion and who is coming. A few minutes, and free to start.

  2. Print the door sign.

Print it from the app on A4 or Letter. Guests scan the QR code with their phone's camera and send something in.

  3. Share the link ahead too.

In the invitation or the group chat, so people have time and those who can't come still take part.

  4. Show it, then keep it.

Messages and photos go up on the screen during the event, and everyone keeps the keepsake page afterwards.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Do guests need an app?
No. They scan the code or open the link in their phone's browser and give a first name. Nothing to install and no account.
Can the host remove a message?
Yes. The host and co-organisers can remove anything, and it comes off the screen and the keepsake at once. You can also approve everything before the day.
Is the page private?
Anyone with the link can open it, and it isn't listed in search engines. The host can take anything off it or delete it.
